How to install RSAT on Windows 8 RTM

October 25, 2014

After reading some blog posts it looks like Microsoft are working on a new version of Remote Server Administrative Tools (RSAT) which will be fully compatible with Windows 8 RTM. However at the moment we still have the Release Preview version of RSAT to use but if you try to install it normally it provides a lovely error of “unspecified error”. Yipee!!

Give the following a go, it will install all remote administrator tools on Windows 8:

1.Download the RSAT package intended for Windows 8 Release Preview: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28972

2.Open the .msu file with a tool such as 7-Zip and extract all the files somewhere appropriate

3.Open an elevated command prompt (Windows key + x, then select Command Prompt (Admin)) and change directory to where you extracted the .msu.

4.Run the following command to install (if x86 you probably have a different .xml filename): pkgmgr /n:Windows6.2-KB2693643-x64.xml

5.Wait a while. You can look in task manager for Windows Package Manager. When it disappears, the installation is done.
